The large rock north of Morocco is known as the "Rock of Gibraltar" or simply "Gibraltar." It is located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, just across the Strait of Gibraltar from Morocco. The rock is made of limestone and rises to a height of 1,400 feet (426 meters) above sea level. It is considered one of the Pillars of Hercules, which were two mountains that marked the edge of the known world in ancient times. Gibraltar is also home to an important British naval base and is a popular tourist destination known for its famous Barbary macaque population, which is the only wild monkey population in Europe.
